Childhood and Family
In this series I have tried to communicate a sense of place. The paintings draw on childhood memories. There is perhaps some nostalgia. But, more importantly, they represent a conscious process of coming to terms with my early life in all its aspects, those joyful comforting experiences, but also some more difficult, painful elements. However, this series isn't really about the past, rather it is an attempt to draw those reminiscences into an active relation to the present. These places, a priori so mundane, so humdrum, so utterly without any sense of the extraordinary, have for me become mythologised through the process of memory. Through this alchemy of recollection I believe we can create a world of meaning, a landscape of symbol.
