Cloudscapes

This series is rooted then in the routine, quotidian and ephemeral, the ordinary yet ever extraordinary sky but it is equally an attempt at a liberation from the depiction things and objects, about finding a balance between the pictorial and the abstract and about painting in and of itself: to convey that intimate distance one encounters out on the mountain side. As with much of my work there is a sense of the uncanny which comes through unconsciously i.e I don’t try to make my work have that quality, rather, that seems to be the nature of my work; what comes out. And I suppose these works are a kind of sequence of tone poems.
