eyes to eyes, face to face

The face is the mirror of the mind, and eyes without speaking confess the secrets of the heart. St. Jerome Eyes too eyes, face to face is part of my ongoing series of mixed media paintings exploring the face as a mask. In this body of work, I photographed my subjects with my iPhone after asking them to think of a powerful moment in their lives, I enlarge and print out the photos and begin my process of painting with encaustics and oil which transform the mask into a portrait that brings surface and depth together. My goal is to create compelling images that bring attention to the subjectivity of perception. When a viewer confronts an image of a face, they “face” their own perceptions.
