Mannequins provide a reflection of a society’s perceived accepted ideas of aesthetic, artistic, cultural and even moral norms. They can also be an indicator of changing trends that challenge those accepted norms.
For me they also spark off speculative imaginings of our future society. A society that will have to answer some fundamental questions about what it means to be human. As robotics and cybernetics develops into biorobotics and robots become more like us, advances in biomechanics will see humans becoming more like machines.
Will our future society be a peaceful synthesis of the “human” and the artificial? Will the Mannequins stay in the shop windows for their human masters, or will we be destined to become their dummies?
