I have always been fascinated and drawn to iconography and idols. Adorable One was inspired by a trip to the Se Cathedral and Igreja de Sao Francisco and catacombs in Porto. Both interiors shimmering with gold leaf, adorned with baroque carvings and vast collections of sacred art. The dazzling finery for some may appear only an ostentatious display of wealth, however as I entered the nave I was overwhelmed by a reassuring sense of authority and calm. For many, in religion there is an answer, reassurance, structure, ritual and comfort. Created in cardboard and wire, this work is a stark contrast to the gilded carvings I found in Porto. I have illustrated my own otherworldly creatures and hope to have captured some of the serenity I felt visiting these sacred places. The size given here is an estimate as the work is currently unframed.

Lucille Moore studied Art Foundation at the Pittville Studios, University of Gloucestershire before going on to specialise in Textile Art at Winchester School of Art where she created mixed media sculptures and installations. She graduated from Winchester with First Class Hons and was awarded a prize for outstanding achievement. Lucille continues to develop her own practice and started to exhibit her mixed media works in 2015. Her work is inspired by people and places, creating illustrative works with character. She is influenced by folk art and culture and has a particular interest in sacred art and rituals. She explores the theme of identity, celebrating empowerment and also exposing vulnerability. “I like to work spontaneously. When I over think it, it becomes fussy and you lose the openness and honesty. I think this is how sometimes humour emerges, and that’s not to say that the work is frivolous, I believe humour can help you think deeper about real or serious issues but I don’t consider that before I start making. I love Art brut and the honesty of the work because it is so pure and unadulterated and I can imagine the process of the making and it feels exciting and free. That’s how I want my work to be”
