BOUYS Hand Hooked Wool Rug /Mat or Wall Hanging Collage

Years ago wooden homes had few floor coverings. It was popular in Eastern Canada and the Boston States to use leftover scraps of wool to make rugs to cover the wooden floors. To get the last use out of an old coat it was cut into strips and hooked into a burlap potato sack. Fast forward to this century where rug hooking has been transformed from a necessity to an art form. Wools are specially dyed and linen is used instead of the potato sack. The background for this rug was dyed to resemble old barn boards. I actually rounded up six buoys and played with different compositions before selecting this one. Rug hooking is a very time consuming process. I must confess I am not a fast rug hooker and this rug took about eight months to complete. The wool is cut into long strips and placed behind the linen. With a hook the wool is picked up to the front of the linen where it forms a loop. After completion the rug is bound with a cord and then whipped with yarn. Because it is hand made the finished rug may not have perfect edges -- that is the charm of the art form. I have attached this rug to velcro and a hanging bar so that it can become a wall hanging. However the velcro could be removed and be used as a rug.
