About The Artwork

This collage is about the houses we inhabit and how with time, memories accumulate in them. Leaving a house behind then means having to transport all the little pieces of our lives that built it with time, to a new shell made for living. The cut-out bits and pieces represent the fragments we temporary detach from but are able to rebuild elsewhere, almost like pieces of a puzzle.

Anouk was born and raised in Switzerland. She then went on to study Fine Arts at Goldsmith's College (BA Hons) in London, UK and Sociology (MSc) in Montreal, Canada. She now lives and works in Montreal, where she has her studio. Her current work concentrates mainly on collage and painting. Collage to her is a playful process, engaging with found images and recycled materials often found by chance, assembling them until everything reaches a balance. Anouk's attraction to painting lies in the fact that they take shape through re-visiting uncertainties. Painting does not offer the possibility of an ending achieved by the image, a sense of conclusion. Rather, it proposes an extended sense of temporality made possible by each making of a painting. Anouk's paintings are not only focused on the depiction of the human figure, but are very much trying to reach beyond appearances and to question what makes us who we are; i.e. human beings with complex identities, experiences and feelings. Her work relies on memories and the search for a simplifed, at times symbolic pictoral language, rather them truthful depiction. Her influences in painting come from artists such as Willem de Kooning, Pierre Bonnard and many incredible Art Brut artists, just to name a few. Anouk's work is held in a number of private collections internationally. She also has been commissioned both collages and paintings and works in colaboration with other collage artists worldwide.
