About The Artwork

This painting is constructed from elements painted intuitively on Bristol board paper, which are then cut and arranged onto an acrylic-coated Masonite board. I arrange vivid hues alongside subtle tones, and rich and opaque passages with translucent glazes. These elements overlap, intertwine, and accentuate each other, suggesting the wild, exuberant action of a dancer. As I continue to explore a series of paper collage made in this exciting, painterly fashion, I particularly enjoy pushing it forward onto rigid, rectangular surfaces.

Jeremy Rabus is an artist currently living and working in St. Louis, MO. He received a BFA in Painting from Southern Illinois University in 2004. He has exhibited in the Midwest region and across the United States in venues such as Hoffman LaChance Contemporary (St. Louis, MO), Jamie Brooks Fine Art (Costa Mesa, CA), Front/Space (Kansas City, MO), Snowflake/City Stock (St. Louis, MO), Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts (St. Louis, MO), the St. Louis Artists’ Guild, and the Ethical Society of St. Louis. In December 2013, he exhibited with Hoffman LaChance Contemporary at Aqua Art Miami, an international art fair. Rabus is represented by Hoffman LaChance Contemporary and Jamie Brooks Fine Art. He is an educator as well as an artist, and has taught several classes in color theory and painting. "In my most recent work, I apply a hue, often chosen arbitrarily, as an organic shape or taped off geometrically, and then play other colors against it, accumulating layers of passages, strategically concealing certain areas. I then use a power sander to grind away at the layers, revealing fascinating shapes and producing textures that resemble stone, mist, lava, or rivulets. I continue to add passages of color until I achieve a “landscape” that provokes an immediate, visceral reaction. The finished piece must possess a concrete sense of reality, not necessarily as a faithful representation of landscape from life, but an immersive optical experience, or encounter. My goal is to manipulate these principles of optics within the confines of paint’s material properties, exploring how its physical properties — opacity, translucence, fluidity or viscosity— form an imagined landscape that feels real and present."
