About The Artwork

Materials- On Board. Wood Cut Outs. Sculpted Clay. Acrylic and Oil Paint. Finger Marks, Dripping Matt Paints. Spray Paint. Washes, Wiping and Erasing Paint. Description Of Painting- Flamingos flight for survival amongst oil and residue left from the rapid growth of human kind. Transportation is a strong theme in my work and in this painting. The desire for humans to spread their breed and expand at the cost of other organisms.ie; The Roman Roads. I experiment with the idea of animals living along side us and making the best of their situation, Beauty in aggression, Triumph over confusion. This is all connected to the emotional state of ourselves and the planet and the beautiful discoveries we can learn from, from other species. Going back to basics. Animals are a strong source of inspiration in my work. Ripping all our preconceived ideas of how we should be, and what we have to do, to what we are and how magnificent that is. This simplistic approach to life, is mirrored in my application of paint.and the marks made by sensitive and sometimes quite fast and childish movements. Showing that every action has a consequence how ever small or insignificent one may see it. I want the viewer to be aware of their own presence within the painting, sculpture painting allows this significantly as while the viewer mover around the room of the painting so does the light and shadows of the work. I want the viewer to think about themselves in context to the painting and the world they live in, physically and emotionally. The world is something we can maintain but we can not control, this is evident in my abstract expressionistic style of painting. Artist Statement- My work embodies creation through movement and action. Layered by continual development it evolves alongside the artist; my feelings, experiences, insecurities and ideas. The paintings symbolise birth and its struggle; its frantic, stunning, liberating, frightening and in-powering journey. My work embodies life through emotion and experience, a personal process as well as a collective observation upon the world around us. Protection and connection carry us forward to new horizons, however intimidating these may be we must move forward. You are born with the desire to create but painting is more than the artist, they are merely portals for something superior to shine through.

BIOGRAPHY Scarlett Raven was born in London in 1986. She began painting at the age of four and attend the prestigious Central Saint Martins. Scarlett is daughter to writer, Siobhan Cunningham, and saxophone player, Raphael Ravenscroft ( Pink Floyd, Abba, Marvin Gaye and Gerry Rafferty's Bakerstreet) and grandaughter to Trevor Ravenscroft writer of the best seller 'The Spear Of Destiny'. At the beginning of her BA in Fine Art, Scarlett began to be recognized as an artistic talent, and was asked to participate in a variety of group shows. Just into the second year of her BA, at the age of twenty-one; Scarlett had her first solo show, Seascapes, on London's Cork Street. Scarlett was, and is, one of the youngest artists to have a solo exhibition on this famed street; and her entry into the art world as a professional artist captured much media attention and recorded selling's' of over £30,000 in just under two weeks of exhibiting. Scarlett counts Orlando Bloom (famed actor), Jim Beach (manager of the iconic rock band, Queen), boy band Take That and Lord Jonathan Marland as collectors of her works. 2007 also marked her first important commission, a painting for the Live Nations entrance, located on Oxford Street, in London. Scarlett has just completed the cover for a fundraising record called The Beautiful Game, released for Prince Harry's Sentebale charity. Scarlett has become a firm supporter of the charity Harry set up with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, which raises money for vulnerable children in the mountain kingdom. Scarlett's passion of music, and desire to be able to reach a diverse group of people through her art has lead her to collaborate with a variety of musical talents. At the age of twenty, Scarlett was asked to design the album artwork for the band, Wiredasies. In January 2008, David Saw released his solo album Broken Down Figure (produced by Ben Taylor, son of James Taylor and Carly Simon), and asked Scarlett to create drawings for the cover of his album. Rozy Music's Andy Mackay and Paul Thompson asked her to work on the art work for there new band The Metaphors. Working with these artists has allowed Scarlett to stretch her artistic vision further, and begin to realize her future goal of creating works that will have the opportunity to be seen outside the confines of the gallery space, and be able to reach a wider audience.
