About The Artwork

It's a 7-panel art piece with Locksmith stickers from NYC on canvas, which was done from 2014 to 2020 --- The concept here is to give dignity to some of the most despised pieces of visual communication in NYC. ------------- OK, GATES R US, “Abstract Composition FOR Yellow”: As you can see, it’s a sticker symphony, starting very subdued with gray, then more defined color sequences are evolving, and where the “golden section” is, its climax in yellow – with a last culmination in yellow at the end – the repetition of the main theme - before it ends. ______________ My DEVANDALIZING series repurposes and re-contextualizes stickers, graffiti tags, signaling tape, and similar fragments that "vandalize" the streets of New York and of other cities around the world. For over ten years now, I have been collecting - "devandalizing" - these artifacts of the urban environment as the source material for my collages and paintings on canvas and other materials. Applied in a chaotic, semi-random, or determined way, these artworks reflect and feedback on the evolving phenomenon of urban visual expression. The stickers were collected from the streets of cities such as Detroit, Las Vegas, Québec, Montréal, Palermo, Catania, Naples, Rome, Florence, Milan, Havana, and, of course, Berlin and New York.

Egon Zippel was born in Timișoara, Romania, in 1960 to German parents. When Romania's future dictator, Nicolae Ceaușescu, rose to power in the early 1960s, the Zippels presciently left 1964 for the Mannheim-Heidelberg region, Germany, to begin life anew. After a stint in the German army, 1979-1981, Egon studied graphic design at the University of Mannheim and received a Fulbright scholarship comprising an introductory month at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and the academic year of 1984-85 at the University of Texas in Austin. Over the next few years, he studied computer graphics at the New York Institute of Technology and continued with postgraduate studies at the Institute for New Media at the Städel Art Academy in Frankfurt 1993-1994. During the early '90s, Egon also lived in Milan, Italy, until eventually settling again in New York City in 1996. Egon believes in predetermination as well as free will and everything in-between. Wrestling with these contradictions makes life playful and infinitely more complex. – ZMDW, GMDK (z) NNDNMF VTY – x - xx - xxx
