This mixed media collage is a 3 dimensional work, built up from paint chips, vintage hand-written letters, copies of textile fragments, scraps of my brightly coloured paint palettes and black ink drawings. I like building up surfaces, starting with a cardboard structure, and then adding elements until they take on an architectural quality, giving the viewer a peek down a hidden corner of colour, a hallway of intrigue, typography, textiles and pattern to tell its story. The title, 'Ginepro di Sardegna' is the name of a perfume, and the evocation of a fragrance is yet another idea I like to incorporate into my work, as it involves all the senses, and is as abstract as the work itself. My use of materials is deliberately humble because I want to illustrate that art can be made with simple materials and still create magic. The collage is composed of cardboard and paper, mounted on bright white acid-free illustration board, which extends beyond the collage by a few inches, leaving a white border all around. Framed in a simple, black wooden museum-mount frame, with about an inch of air between the illustration board and the glass, giving the 3D aspects room to float within.

Canadian artist Shelley Davies creates paintings, collages and photographs that are bold, colour-infused and 3 dimensional. With a background in animation, feature films, television and theatre, Shelley's many creative pursuits have led her to painting and illustration. Wit, colour and play are what Shelley aims for, using collage, paint and happy accidents to create work with a strong graphic design sensibility. Working as an editorial illustrator, Shelley's art has been published in numerous magazines and newspapers across Canada. A frequent contributor to Uppercase Magazine, she makes herself right at home with their ethos of blending art, design and typography. Her paintings incorporate that bold colour she so loves, all with a sculptural aspect using multi-dimensional blocks, building up rhythmic layers of collaged, tightly composed fields of vibrant colour. Creating work that acts as an object in space, as well as an image, is very much a part of her methodology, with the sculptural dimension a key ingredient in her art.
