My creative process begins with a deep dive into the world of discarded paper. I search flea markets, charities shops and recycling centres for old books, magazines, newspapers, and other paper products that have been deemed no longer useful. Monika Gardyla is a self-taught artist whose bold, intricate collages reflect her love of geometry, nature, and vibrant color. Born in Poland, she has lived in different countries, constantly exploring new cultures and ways of seeing the world. Now, she splits her time between the creative energy of London and the wild beauty of Bahia, Brazil—two places that deeply inspire her work. Leaving Poland in search of freedom, she embraced a life of travel, learning, and artistic exploration. She found herself in Bahia, a place full of music, color, and the easy rhythm of life, where nature is untamed and creativity flows effortlessly. Between the forest and the ocean, she gathers inspiration from unexpected places—old books, driftwood, demolished forgotten materials, and the vibrant local culture—turning them into striking, layered compositions. In contrast, her time in London fuels her with a different kind of energy—fast-paced, dynamic, and filled with artistic challenges, from creating work for major hotels to exhibiting internationally. Her creative process is intuitive and experimental, layering textures, bold geometric forms, and striking color contrasts. Influenced by Polish poster design, Bauhaus principles, and the rich, sun-soaked hues of Bahia, her work is a vibrant interplay of balance, movement, and unexpected harmony. Monika’s work has been shown in exhibitions and collections worldwide, including a series of 161 large-scale collages for the Kipton Hotel in Frankfurt and a large collection for Loft Hotel in Cambridge. In 2022, her work was exhibited in the prestigious Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts.
