In the streets of Brooklyn and most urban centers Billboards get tagged and vandalized by everyone from graffiti artist to the disenfranchised. Sometimes in this chaotic process images of grater beauty or stronger narratives than what was originally intended come to life. This is the inspiration for this collage series. Seeking to combine concepts of high and low art coming together in order to create larger narratives, or abstract composition in the viewers mind; the work plays with concept of the perceive value as different are styles are combined on a single surface. The works mixes decorative materials like wall paper with images of renaissance paintings, found street art, commercial drawing, illustrations and graffiti seeking to create new connections and challenge the viewer.

Ivan Rivera’s latest group of work, Collections From the Street, focuses on the accumulation and layering of graffiti in urban settings and the unexpected yet consistent narratives which seem to evolve organically when they collide. Inspired by the city in which he calls home, and the ever presence of street art, his new series of collages seek to capture vignettes of the ever mutating visual landscape around his Brooklyn studio. Ivan has had multiple exhibitions both in the US and internationally including Galleries in Chelsea and Lower East Side, Manhattan, Williamsburg and Bushwick, Brooklyn. Currently he divides his time between teaching at Parsons The New School for Design, The School of Visual Arts and Fordham University while maintaining a full time studio practice. He is currently an artist in resident at Brooklyn Wayfarers, a program lead by George Ferrandi. In addition to collage, Ivan is an avid painter across many mediums including encaustic, oils and acrylics, mixed media as well as found object sculpture. Ivan holds a BFA from Parsons The New School for Design and a Masters in Fine Art from Brooklyn College. For more works and information about Ivan, please visit his website .
