“Kukka” Flower is woven in a traditional Finnish style transparency weave structure called “Kuultokudos” (Shimmer Weave). The fragile texture of the fine linen background and delicately placed pattern inlay allow for a changing interaction of light and space, creating a fine ethereal sight. Fabulous simple elegance. The background weave of the transparency is handwoven using natural coloured linen yarns. The inlay design is woven with hand spun white linen yarn. Size: 40 cm x 40 cm The tapestry is set in a white frame. Transparency weaves are thought to have originated in Japan or Scandinavian countries. Transparencies became popular in Finland in the early 1900’s and were woven for use as sheer window curtains. In the 1970’s, interior designers used transparencies to create large free-hanging room dividers or wall hangings.

My work is influenced by my Finnish and Saami heritage and the colours of the world around me are the inspiration to create my art with wool. I am fascinated by the ancient arts of felt making and handweaving converting raw wool into contemporary tapestries. I hand dye most of my wools, yarns and silk fibres and use locally sourced wools wherever possible. These become the paints that create my canvas. From an early age, the world of textiles has been my passion. I studied hand weaving, hand spinning, felt making and colour theory at Kootenay School of the Arts, under the tutorship of Judith MacKenzie. I currently make and sell limited edition hand spun yarns. More recently I have turned my attention to the art of felt making and weaving rya rugs, creating pictures and functional objects with wool.
