While making sculpture that incorporated the use of pills, I began photographing the pills I was no longer taking. I worked with the photographs in photoshop and re-worked them to appear more like a drawing and less like a photograph. Another approach I took to re-working the photographs was to erase the original markings on the pills and replace them with my own language that describes my symptoms of mental illness or the side effects of the medications I take. "Delusions" refers to thoughts not rooted in reality or "Insomnia" refers to an unwanted side effect of a particular medication. Working in my studio, I started to print the images onto wallpaper found in sample books. The colors I use to print the images refer to the emotions associated with words, like "Anxiety" or are a reflection of the multi-colored marketing of pills to consumers. Each wallpapered screen print is collaged onto large wood panels in a de-centered pattern alluding to the disorganized thought pattern of Schizophrenia. My use of wallpaper refers to the short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gillman. This essay is regarded as an important early work of American feminist literature because it brings to light attitudes towards the mental health of women in the 19th century. Wallpaper covers walls just as pills cover the symptoms of mental illness experienced while in treatment. Images of bird cages, parrots, elephants and empty chairs on wallpaper are repeated throughout these works. The imagery of the parrot is a stand in for my experience of hearing voices that did not exist in reality. The image of the elephant refers to the metaphor of an issue that no one wants to discuss.

Tina La Porta; 26 September 1967 is an American mixed media artist, photographer, painter, sculptor, printmaker, sound designer, and poet who spent most of her adult life in New York City. Regarded as one of the most enlightened artists of contemporary times, she is known for founding the deep psychological insight movement in sculpture, collage, medication art and for the wide variety of styles that she helped develop and explore. Among her most famous works are the Triptych, From the Edge of Darkness (I Lost Myself), Hand to Mouth, All The Pills In My House, Side Effects, Falloff, Medicine Ball, Happy Pills, Relapse, Split, Speaking to a Voice Unknown (a dramatic portrayal of the torment of mental illness.) Tina demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent in her early years, painting and assembling in a naturalistic manner through her childhood and adolescence. During the last decade of the 20th century, her style changed as she perfected different theories, techniques, and ideas. After 9/11, the event motivated La Porta to explore more radical styles, beginning a series of dreamy pieces made with resin coated anti-depressant pills, layering resin, acrylic ink, and spray paint on board. La Porta's work is often categorized into periods. While the names of many of her later periods are debated, the most commonly accepted periods in her work are the Art and Technology Period (1991–2003), and the Assemblage Period (2004–2019), also referred to as the Medications Period. Much of La Porta's work of the late 1900s and early 2000s is in a neo hyper design style, and her work since then, often has characteristics of Postmodernism combining elements of her earlier styles. Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of her creative life, La Porta achieved universal renown for her revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and has become an internationally recognized figure in the art of our times.
