About The Artwork

I work without any previous sketch. Every work is a new adventure. I spent five year studying at the National School of Design in Cuba as graphic designer. I work mostly with paper pre- stained that I use for my collage. Also I have a big stock of antique papers that i got in flea markets in my second hometown Paris.

Biography & statement of my work Antonio Nunez was born in Havana , Cuba . As a child he was fascinated with drawing and painting. During his early years he remembers spending hours with his grandfather drawing with any material and media he could find. Antonio graduated from the National School of Design in Havana in 1978 and in 1980 he came to the United States in the Mariel exodus. Antonio's' work has been recognized by important collectors in the United State and Europe . He has participated in several solo and collective art shows. In addition he has done illustrations for different publications and completed several paintings for a hotel in Washington DC . Antonio actually lives in Miami ,Florida and Paris , France . Statement of his work For Antonio, painting is an escape from daily reality, an approach to a magic and imaginary world where memories of his infancy are brought to light through his personages. Symbols of innocence lost and scenes of his childhood reappear in his ar Symbols, elements and scenes of my childhood, lost in time, reappear in my dreams and creativeness. Found objects, fragments of antique pictures, engraving and documents are constant in my work. I look for secret codes that sometimes can't be translated by the viewers. I cover the surface with an old patina to enhance and reflect past time. I choose a very limited palette of color as a reminiscence of my early year in Cuba, where resources were limited to the use of dirt and clay, burlap and wood. I hope my work will awaken the child hidden in each of us. Medias review and critics "For this Cuban painter that burst with force in our artistic world, painting is the bridge between the reality and fantasy" (Nuestro Orgullo, Univision March 2006) (Translation) "The first thing that impact Antonio Nunez painting is the use of colors, mixes, shadows and lights that allows to penetrate into his work.... A world sometimes three-dimensional with powerful and mysterious figures is present in his art..." (El Nuevo Herald May 2006) (Translation) The work of Antonio Nunez is characterized by the use of symbolism directed to call the attention of an evident reality. (Translation of "La Revista - Diario las Americas " February 10, 2006 ) A painter, like A.N.
