About The Artwork

Using photo transfers, fiber paper, pastels, and paint, I layer the complexities of emotions surrounding loss and disease. I explore the dichotomy between pain and beauty, connection and separation, life and death. In these series, I use my mom’s snapshots, cutting and manipulating them between foreground and background. "Her Story is Ours" and "Lost" pulls the images together on a large unstretched panels taking my mom’s struggles as a woman and combining them with what is happening in the world today, putting our stories within the context of history and heritage. "Suspension of Time and Place" reveals the process of using the travel snapshots as a tiny canvas hung in an installation using audio of my mom playing the piano to establish an alternate space that holds the power of the mother daughter connection and separation. As I paint each 4 x 6 photograph, I appropriate and reconstruct my mother’s journey while then cutting up my writing to deconstruct my story in relation to our combined memories. My hope is to create a shared history where the intersection of lives lived connect, ebb, and flow. In such a chaotic world today, my experiences of loss and grief echo the tone and tenor as I search for meaning through art.

I have been a working artist for over 20 years. After growing up outside of Chicago, I moved to New York, where I received my master's of art from the prestigious program through NYU and the International Center of Photography. When I returned to Chicago, I continued to work on my art, writing and curating all while raising 4 kids. My work focuses on the effects of genetics, the mother/daughter relationships, and the body. I explore themes of cancer as a metaphor in my own work as well as the biennial exhibit I curate, Voices & Visions, Standing on the Bridge Between Health and Disease. The mind, body and spirit connections and separations echo the theme in art that out of darkness comes light.
