Miniature 14 Collage

My collages are made exclusively of used metro tickets from Paris and its suburbs. I handle and transform them in a number of ways: dying, tearing, cutting, folding, thinning, stacking... I have been collecting tickets for years, helping myself on the ground, and in bins as I go along, but mainly in the stations that are most easily accessible from where I live in the western suburb of Paris. I also have an growing community of suppliers, and a few collection boxes in local schools and in the municipal library. Having tens of thousands in stock, I shouldn't fall short of my raw material even though paper tickets will soon be fully replaced by electronic passes like in London and other cities. My attraction to this little rectangular piece of white card divided in the middle by the magnetic strip goes back a long way, and not only because I have always been a user of public transport. The metro ticket unites my love of paper, of Paris, of reusing, of assembling and combining separate elements into semi-geometrical or semi-impressionist compositions. The energy I am trying to convey in my work is made of the energy of all these people whose comings and goings I translate into a harmony of form, colour and texture. If possible, I want my work to be a reflection of the beauty in the world. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This collection I am presenting on Saatchi Gallery is called "Miniatures". They are 15x15cm pieces, mounted on thin cardboard, and set in the middle of a 50x40cm white bevelled card surround. Each one is unique. Miniatures come unframed, but the 50x40cm is a standard size, readily available in framing shops. A thin wooden or metal frame is well suited to the subtle colour and texture of these small compositions that resemble textile weave. My choice of framing a small piece in a wide surround is inspired by the traditional way of presenting collections of precious fabrics. The squares are made with strips that I cut out in various widths out of coloured sheets. Those "primary" sheets are covered in overlapping metro ticket halves, the cuttings being either dyed before assembled, or coloured once assembled. I produce Miniatures on demand and in series according to the client's wish for a colour scheme.
