About The Artwork

The subject of vulva beauty has long been one of interest. The ancient Greeks plucked or burned off pubic hair because they thought having pubic hair was uncivilized. Many women in the Middle Ages removed their pubic hair for hygiene reasons, since lice were prevalent. Some women even used a pubic hair wig called a merkin. Queen Elizabeth I shaved off her eyebrows but kept her pubic hair. Women have always been under pressure to keep up with outlandish body fashion trends. Today, women have many options when it comes to pubic hair beauty. Women can shape their pubic hair, or remove it using depilatories, soft wax, hard wax, sugaring methods, laser hair removal, or electrolysis.

Being born in the 1960’s has allowed me to witness a lot of changes in America especially concerning women’s rights. Today, women and girls live in the legacy of those women who fought for our freedom regarding family life, religion, government, employment and education. But, there is still work to be done. My portraits and collages explore the restricting facets of feminine beauty, cultural anxieties about female sexuality; it’s rites, and representations in contemporary society today. My theory originates in my own desire to be beautiful, loved and accepted. My artwork seeks to reclaim feminine stereotypes that are deemed disgusting such as beauty rituals, pubic hair, and female bodily functions. I redefine femininity as an act of reclamation, an act of learning to love or at least accepting myself as I am, despite what society suggests
