A sumi-ink painting on mulberry paper was cut, randomly mixed, and reassembled by sewing in gold thread on another layer of mulberry paper.

The finalized work is abstract that was inspired by both chance and reaction. I visually imaged rocks for the organic form, but conceptually it may be anything in the nature that is broken, reformed, and replaced, yet inherently keeping its recognizable form.

Jae Schalekamp was born and raised in South Korea. She is currently residing in Albany, NY. When she came back to painting as a full-time artist, after 15 years of designing textiles, she turned to nature for inspiration. The first series “Poised in Nature” conveys nature’s trace of time and adaptation to its environment in a calm and intimate setting. Jae has experimented with different subject matters and styles. She is interested in identifying unchanging truths and patterns of life in phenomenal cycle of nature. She uses forms and compositions to express state of mind with an element of eastern philosophy. Her recent works includes abstract paintings and collage/ mixed-media pieces that is composed of mulberry paper.
