∆ The Muffin Man returns, this time as a white carpet thread, and he is starting to ponder what’s in front of him. It’s a sunny day, and he’s decided to travel uphill to see what he can see. And what he sees, is a tree, and another being, oddly similar to him in a sideways way. His brain begins to send out waves of wonder, and his insides get so snarled up a slight loop pops out. Seemingly simple - almost childlike - at first glance, delving deeper one finds certain questions arise. What exactly is TMM standing in? A teleporting machine, an elevator of fascination, just a box? Reminiscent of The Great Glass Elevator in Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory,” it’s hard to tell exactly what this box-like glob is but it feels slightly magical. Although a mirror would be a stretch, the dark black line with two knobs at the top does bear more than a passing resemblance to what TMM’s reflection might look like, in a pond or in the sky. And he is staring at it, seeming to commune directly. A very small composition with a straightforward layout, this piece resonates with the joy of discovery, the questioning of self, and other elements a person who considers things a bit more closer than average might contemplate. Why do we go up hills? What do we see on the way down? What about the space between? Only The Muffin Man knows. Maybe. ∆

ART, LIKE LIFE, HAPPENS BY ACCIDENT. A whiff of control; some semblance of steering. And belief of a firm grip. But we're grasping at the air beneath our feet. The truth is: we don't hold anything. It comes in bits and bobs, dashes and jots - brief glimpses, spaces, sliding out of sight. For truth, is to feel it slip away. And then to try to create it. - - - Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, & often both, my art reflects the intersection between logic and intuition, real and abstract, time and the timeless. - - - - - - - - - Steven Tannenbaum grew up in New Jersey, where he learned how to garden and defend himself. He now lives in Portland, Oregon, and his art is in public & private collections across the US, Israel, and England. You can find more of his work at: www.whatifind.com
