This schizzo - a small mixed media collage on paper mounted on stretched canvas, was inspired by Ovid (The Death of Adonis, Book X) : 'a flower, of the colour of blood, was created such as pomegranates carry, that hide their seeds under a tough rind. But enjoyment of it is brief; for, lightly clinging, and too easily fallen, the winds deflower it, which are likewise responsible for its name, windflower (anemone).' Though my oeuvre is transversal and not limited to one particular technique, the first word that comes to mind to describe it is "materico": Since 1983 I have been working on open-ended series, often with heavy rag papers, and incorporating collage elements. Erasing, ripping out, tearing up, and cutting are just as important as painting or drawing (scissors are a predominant drawing tool) . Matisse’s cut-outs and Godard’s jump-cuts are obvious inspiration. My process is highly personalised: I almost exclusively use the long-discontinued, now vintage, "I Maestri del Colore" (Fratelli Fabbri Editore) from the 60s and 70s as my source for the reproductions of art in the collages. Each book in the collection has 15 large reproductions of one artist and a biography, and totals nearly 300 painters. I particularly like the ink colours used in these older books. Sometimes I let the viewer see what painter I'm "quoting" - in this case, Piero's portrait of the Duke of Montefeltro (the other half of the diptych portraying his wife). At other times it’s impossible to distinguish between what I’ve painted and the photographic reproduction. This is my homage to John Berger. In the opening shot of the BBC film "Ways of Seeing" (1972), he cuts out Venus's head from a huge reproduction of Botticelli's "Venus and Mars". When I saw it in 1974 it totally changed my perspectives on art though I never consciously set out cutting up pictures of paintings, years later, with this in mind.

'Ce n'est pas la colle qui fait collage.' Max Ernst Lovica Dean is an unknown American-Italian artist. Ovid's Metamorphoses and the paranoid/critical method are worth mentioning as cardinal wellsprings for her practice. Her paintings usually include collage which best expresses the Humpty Dumpty times in which we live, with explicit references to painting of the past, and almost always worked on over years to arrive at a Pompeiian appearance.
