The Mixed Forest of white spruce and beech in the early morning fog amidst the colors of autumn foliage. The Camaldoli Biogenetic Nature Reserve is a protected natural area located in Tuscany in the province of Arezzo within the Casentino Forests, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park; precisely, it extends on the southern slope of the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines between the localities of Giogo Secchieta and Poggio Tre Confini, in the municipality of Poppi occupying an area of 1,169 hectares. The earliest records of the forest known as Camaldoli , date back to when a small plot of land was donated in 1012 to St. Romuald, founder of the Camaldolese order, by a benefactor named Maldolo, in the locality of Campo Amabile. The initial property of the monks was about 160 hectares. At Campo Amabile St. Romuald built the first nucleus of the hermitage and, further down , the hospice of Fontebona, where the present monastery stands. The monks with the passage of time, increased the area of their property both through successive donations and purchases . The monks devoted great effort to the cultivation of their forest, as was prescribed by the "customs" of Camaldoli. In particular, they gradually replaced the original mixed forest with pure plantations of Spruce . This was because this species was then more valuable or perhaps also because the columnar and severe structure of the fir forests, aroused in the monks a greater sense of mysticism and religiosity, compared to the mixed deciduous-dominated forest.
