About The Artwork

Inheritance is inspired by "The Banjo Lesson", a painting by Henry Ossawa Tanner. My family has a print of the banjo lesson hanging in our dining room. It’s important to me because a memory I have is strongly associated. When I was in elementary school I had an assignment to do a report on a family member and I chose my uncle John. I wrote down everything my uncle told me about himself and the things he learned over time. It wasn’t until many years later that I became aware of how we sat in the chair at the end of the dining room table mirrored the figures and engagement in Tanner’s painting.
