About The Artwork

These three images that depict Paul Gauguin in the last 12 years of his life in French Polynesia in his own style. These images are a challenging study of the Post-Impressionist's genius, which is tainted by his abusive behaviour toward the young Polynesian girls who surrounded him. The titles of these images are particularly striking, as they reference Gauguin's most famous painting from this period, "Nevermore," which depicts a Tahitian woman mourning the loss of her lover. However, in this context, the title takes on a darker meaning, as it serves as a warning to future generations to never allow such abuse to take place again. The three images portray Gauguin in a vivid and colourful style that is reminiscent of his signature post-impressionist aesthetic. However, the scenes that are depicted are fraught with tension and unease. The second image ‘Nevermore - established’ depicts Gauguin, with the sea behind him surrounded some young girls and boys. He has a grey skin colour which reflects the fact that Gauguin infected a string of adolescent lovers with syphilis during his time in Polynesia as well as having three child brides. The images are powerful, as they capture the complexity of Gauguin's legacy. While his artistic genius cannot be denied, the images force viewers to confront his abusive behaviour and the exploitation of the young Polynesian girls who were so central to his work. The images are a testament to the power of art to inspire, challenge and provoke, and they encourage viewers to think critically about the legacy of artists and their actions. I am an artist who likes to explore different materials. I have created works using lacquer on canvas, acrylic on canvas, laser cut plexiglass and engraved gesso board. At the moment I am fascinated by the possibilities of ai generated art and am creating prints with the images I produce. I was a full-time artist from 2001 to 2008 and had exhibitions in London, Paris and Berlin. After that I went into tech and started 3 startups. Now I am combining the artistic side and the tech side by creating ai generated artworks. I create the art works with generative ai and then they are printed on high quality art paper either gloss or matt and Saatchi Art ships them to you. My works are available individually or as a set of three. I like the idea of a set of three as you can tell a story with three pieces. When I first started exploring ai image creation it was like climbing down a ladder into my subconscious as literally anything was possible. Artists using materials tend to stick to what they have always done and don't change very much, with a few legendary exceptions like Picasso. The algorithm has quirkiness built in which can be an advantage or disadvantage as you often don't get what you want but may get something spectacular instead. I found, after choosing a selection from hundreds of images that I created, that the common thread was the 'WOW' factor. My desire is to create images that you are drawn to look at again and again; that literally wow you. That could be because they have a haunting beauty, are satirical, humorous, intriguing, thought-provoking or dark. I hope you like them too. Julia Macmillan @insaineart
