About The Artwork

Although we do have sitings of these beautiful butterflies in the UK, I haven’t seen one, but this painting reflects a special memory for me, of seeing them was on my last trip to Cyprus, also my families birth place. 'Swallowtail & Hibiscus' celebrates some of the sights and colours captured in my memory and heart. Hibiscus, oleander and jasmine grow abundantly in Cyprus. Looking deeper you may just notice the abstract echoes of some Greek graffiti and urban texture I recorded walking through the old town of Limassol. The swallowtail is a digital painting from my own specimen, digitally collaged with my own collection of urban texture and vintage flora. Pigment print onto German Etching, and mounted onto panel. The butterfly is hand glazed with varnish and I added diamond dust to add some magic and to capture the magic I feel when I saw these dancing in the Mediterranean evening sun. Framed in a circular wooden frame with hangings included.

With a background in scientific illustration, Evi Antonio’s art forensically investigates the detail of the natural world. Originally inspired by the lithographic plates in the 19th century, Evi developed her own technique that reflects the authenticity of the traditions and documentation of scientific and natural history art. London based artist Evi Antonio, grew up in the urban landscape but knew early on she she was fascinated in the natural world. She went on to study and graduate with a degree in scientific illustration, working on natural history publications. Her work transitioned into fine art in 2012 when her painting was accepted into the Royal academy summer exhibition in 2012 and projecting her into the fine art world. Evi’s vision is to turn the ordinary into the extra ordinary. Walking around London, she sees and finds beauty in the textures and within the gritty urban environment. She questions what is beauty? Transcending notions of beauty and ugliness in both urban landscape and the natural world by Illuminating aspects of her subjects that may go unnoticed. “Been up close is physical and visceral and as an artist I want to capture that and give back to the viewer.“ Humanity and nature are at a crisis point. The metaphor in the art is that it’s vital now to realise we are all connected and we need to look close not only at the world around us but at ourselves to make positive changes for the future. Evi has exhibited her work both as a solo artist and in group shows all over the UK and Affordable Art Fairs. Awards include, best artist, East of England with the NOAC competition, The Secret Art Prize runner up winner in 2018. Most recently, Winner of The Cult House Open Call 2019. Evi lives and works between her home in Essex and London.
