About The Artwork

When I was creating this series, a question that I had once read or heard somewhere came to mind: "Is there a moon if we’re not looking at it?" The answer is: yes. At least according to Albert Einstein. He is said to have remarked, "The moon does not simply disappear when we are not looking at it." He found physical evidence for this. Apparently, such evidence was necessary to convince people that the moon is not dependent on their observation. The thought that the moon isn't there if we humans are not looking at it is a very anthropocentric idea. So imagine for a moment: there happens to be no one on the entire globe looking at the moon. As a result: the moon no longer exists! But if someone who was sleeping suddenly wakes up and looks at the moon through a gap in the curtain... Then it exists again! What a bizarre situation. That would mean the non-existent moon has to stay alert, otherwise it won't be back in time if someone suddenly looks. Now I know why I drew two moons here: one extra just to be safe, so there is always a moon ready for someone to see. But we mustn't know there are two moons. That’s why one of them has hidden behind a building. Yet we can see that second moon as well, because it hid somewhat clumsily. Like a child under the table. Why did it do so awkwardly? Because it also wants to exist! Just like the other moon. And that can only happen if it is seen. It's getting more and more absurd. You can hardly claim this is a figurative work. Is it then abstract? Is it about a composition of shapes and colors? It's up to you. You can look at the moon and think that you have thereby created it. Or you can think that’s nonsense. You can look at art and 'create' something figurative in your mind. Or you can 'just' see shapes and colors. I warmly invite you to try both options.

I have been an independent artist for over 10 years now. For me painting is a learning process in itself. I always reach a little further than I can. I'm always looking for ways to do things differently. If I keep doing that, it's never going to be a trick. I fight the force of habit in my way of working. Because I see it everywhere: habits are easily adopted in a creative process. Which then is not so creative anymore. Simple things in nature inspire me the most: a breaking wave on the beach, a wilted flower in the garden, an autumn tree in the forest. Sometimes there is an invisible third hand that paints along. Call it flow. Or inspiration. I cannot force this invisible hand to cooperate. When it happens, it always results in a painting that I am satisfied with. I have my own studio and art gallery in Utrecht, the Netherlands, from where I sold over 80 artworks through the years. I also like to exhibit at other locations.
