There are two species of Asian origin, the blue peacock, originating from the Indian subcontinent, and the green peafowl, from southwest Asia; there is also an African species, the Congolese peafowl, native to the Congo basin. Males are known for their piercing calls and their colorful plumage. This last feature is more prominent in Asian species that have a long colorful tail, full of eyes that open in a fan in a mating ritual. The functions of the peacocks' elaborate iridescent coloration and large tail have been the subject of extensive scientific debate.
