About The Artwork

While working with the concept of identity in relation to society and advertising I found that, as women, we are encouraged to consume these products that advertise perfection. Although we are all aware that our appearance will never be an exact match for the model in the advert. We buy it anyway in the hopes that we will reach the perfection that society expects. I feel that women have a lot of pressure put upon them to conform to societies ideals. This creates a vicious circle of consumerism of beauty products and we become trapped within the products. Over time we come to rely on this product, the beauty that becomes 'us' is manufactured and our identities start to blur. By hand drawing the barcode, the process relates it self back to the self. It makes it personal, which is something that digital editing takes away. It shows a journey or engaement with ones self, to the slow journey of distance and loss of identity as the image becomes digitally edited or digitised for any reason, it suddenly loses the personal and becomes just another image of a girl.
