ABOUT THE ARTWORK

12.5x21 inches on 18x24 inch sheet. The border on the sheet (see alternative photo) is for handling only and not intended as part of the image. The pastel is spray fixed but remains delicate. It will be archival hinged to a board, covered in glassine and packaged and boxed as per Saatchi Art's requirements. During most of the year she lived in Brooklyn with her maiden aunt in a brownstone at the intersection of Franklin and President. This afforded a brief walk to the Botanical gardens where she would sketch and make horticultural field notes in watercolor. It was not a coincidence that her name was Flora for she loved blossoms and being in nature more often than not. Her friends called her Flow teasing her in a sing song chant, Oh Oh! Our Flow! She's was always on the go, go, go! The first signs of spring Flow criss crossed Prospect Park looking for early blooming Krokus and Forsythia. She shot photos with a macro attachment on the lens of her Brownie at worm's eye level of sprouts and nascent shoots of herbaceous and woody plants. Summer was her favorite. Early June through late August Flow stayed at a cabin near Lake Tahoe. It was the most precious and palpable evidence of her parents who had departed so long ago that their memory fleeted from her grasp in Brooklyn, where they'd never lived, but flourished in the cabin at which they had summered often. Every creeky board was her mother singing. The hearth's aroma; her father's pipe. It was ironic for her to be growing older summer by summer in a place she felt most childlike. This reversal provided its own engine of inspiration and she need only step into the little sunroom studio her mother had furnished a decade earlier to become animated by her presence.
