The Otago skink is one of New Zealand's rarest reptiles. They are now found in only eight per cent of their former range and have the highest possible threat status, 'Nationally Critically Endangered'. By far the greatest threat to the species is predation by introduced animal species; feral cats. They are able to drop their tails to avoid a predator if necessary. A new tail starts to grow immediately and is totally regenerated.
