About The Artwork

This painting is named after the Númenorean wiseman Amandil. The ships with which he escaped from Númenor towards the elvish Undying Lands are represented by three air baloons on the upper right corner of the paintings, whereas the upcoming destruction of the kingdom of men is represented by the golden clouds on the upper left corner. The use of golden ink is a reference to a splendid but decaying world, paying homage to the Viennese Secessionist artists who used gold as a metaphoric union of life and death. This utopic city climbs up a hill in a need of godly, otherwordly explanations, expressing arrogance but also a religious need to reach God and higher forms of knowledge. Nevertheless, the wisest, Amandil, flees from the island with his air baloons. This is an black, and golden ink illustration on watercolor paper.
