About The Artwork

This charcoal drawing was made en plein air, on a deathly still and brooding English late summer day. The bizzare shapes of the oak tree, and the the arc motif within this composition first drew me in. My aim was to create a synergy between the sharp areas of focus around the oak with the sofer more suggestive mark-making within the broader plains of the composition, and to use the ark motif to bring further balance and harmony, and also act as a vehicle to draw the eye around the composition. There was a certain tension, perhaps even a mildly claustrophobic element to the foreground which is thrown into relief as you get up close to the picture and discover a patchwork of soft shaded ares of paper with a myriad of suggestive impressionist mark-making. This drawing was exhibited at LandEscapes: New Charcoal Drawings; a solo exhibition of new drawings at Centrespace Gallery Bristol in December 2013, and sold to a private collector.

I was born in Brixton in 1981, and grew up in Donegal, later returning to the UK to study Art, Illustration, and Printmaking at the Ruskin School Of Art Cambridge. Drawing is at the core of my practice and forms the fundamental reference point upon which my ideas and practice is based. I draw either from memory or imagination, but mostly directly from life. Through careful study of a subject or topic I explore common themes which run through my work; identity, individuality, loneliness and love. My studio is currently based in Berlin.
