Bananaclipse 2018 Drawing

We drove 300 miles into a memory. We spent the night in a cemetery, smack in the middle of a swamp. We made the ghosts jealous with our giggles. The next morning the bog angels woke us up, said it was time for us to witness something we'd not likely forget. People were already lining a path cut across these hot, muggy lands. We joined them, finding a spot at a burned down gas station. We waited, the eerie daylight wilting beneath some celestial event I never thought I'd ever see. But I was there. And I was hungry. When the time came, I put on my glasses like everyone else, chomped on a ripe fruit ready for my belly, and watched as the moon's shadow kissed the sun completely. What a bunch of PDA. This piece is about memory, more than anything. The banana in the eclipse was something I thought of while watching totality in August of 2017. The cloud pattern contains (wrongly colored) forget-me-nots, a node to how memory can trick us, and small moon and sun diamonds, an ode to how incredible seeing the sun and moon are, even if they appear mundane. The gold painted dots in the background are meant to convey movement. It was windy that day. This piece is done with copic marker, pen, and prismacolor pencil on paper. Thanks for looking.
