Smith is from a family of artists and performers. She was born to a Taiwanese mother and American father. Being bi-racial yet passing as white has profoundly affected her life and art. Her childhood was spent moving frequently, which continued into much of her adult life. A sense of placelessness, but one often injected with a sense of lightness permeates her work. Initially an abstract painter, she turned to representational painting after many solo walks in snowy woods and farmlands at a Finnish artist residency. She also has a career in front of the camera as a commercial actor/model. Smith resides in New York City.
