About The Artwork

The ruins of Boxgrove Priory, Boxgrove, West Sussex. This subject was chosen due to the proximity of the grave of Billy Fiske, and American Hurricane Pilot who was shot down and died in August 1940 during the Luftwaffe attack on the nearby Tangmere Airfield. Fiske pretended to be a Canadian to join the RAF during the period when Americans were forbidden to serve in foreign military services. He managed to land his crippled aircraft safely, but died of severe injuries and burns a day later. He is buried in the Boxgrove Churchyard in accordance with his wishes. His tombstone bears the inscription: "He died for England" I think it's important that the current generation realises the debt they owe to those who gave their lives for the freedom that we all enjoy. I love working in Pen and Pencil because of the ability to show the subject in stark relief. It enables me to illustrate texture and form.

Jack was born in 1944 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has lived in the Middle East and Orient and now makes his home in the UK.

I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. Though I studied art at school, I ended up with a degree in languages, then spent the next 40 years driving airplanes, first for the USAF, then the Airlines. I have always loved vintage planes and cars, therefore have concentrated on them in my art. Now that I have the time to do so, I plan to branch out and am currently working on a commission involving landscape painting
