About The Artwork

Mixed media: ink and pencils on paper, words on acetate. Created 2011 by Nikolaos Tzoumas and Sara Ridgley. (update from Sara) 'Buttering Bread for Ted' started life as 'Bonnet and Bird'. I researched the folkloric history of the crow and discovered that the bird is considered a harbinger of bad luck, war and death in many belief systems. The old Irish spit Badb (pronounced 'bibe' as in 'jibe') is a goddess of war who appears as a hooded crow and is often linked with the witch Morrigan, herald of a death in the family ... and so formed the story of Edward.

Broken Silences - Collection / drawings Nikolaos Tzoumas words Sara Ridgley The "Broken Silences" series of drawings incorporates elusive, fragmented images that are charged with suggestion but deliberately left incomplete, for the words and the narrative to unfold in the viewer's imagination. Recurrent figures from different eras, positions that show only a partial view, or excerpts of text - suggest something hidden. The absence of space suggests the absence of memories - the territory of time. The drama of time in "Broken Silences" recreates an experience that exposes the vulnerability of the individual. Unable to explain himself in the present, he goes back to the past to find his place, the meaning he's looking for. Desire, loss, forgiveness, seduction, are all explored through these transgressed boundaries. The ambiguity in this series of drawings highlights what is present and what is absent.
