It terrifies me to show my work to people. It terrifies me to talk to people. I find it very hard to connect to people, maintain relationships and converse with complete strangers even though I want to connect. I need to find a thread that allows me to believe I’m not alone. I need to be a part of the human experience. I need to be validated. My art fills the need to connect, create and share. I am interested in the abstract, something that doesn’t make its story obvious. Mystery is engaging and obvious is boring. My art must be more than just a pretty picture, composition or form. It must not be realistic, a defined thing, recognizable object or place. My art must connect with more than just random markings. It must formulate the abstract into my story. My process starts from scratch with no predetermined concept, composition or state of mind. Each mark is committed because it is not erased. My obsession with detail tries to maintain some sort of control over the experience. My work takes on organic forms, textures and patterns. Dots, scratches, hatches and lines fill space with strong contrast, gradations, tones and fear spanning the composition. The finished form is often ink drawing on paper, acrylic paint on canvas or digital work printed on paper. Abstraction, controlled expression, pointillism and biomorphic may be some ways to describe my work. I am terrified to connect, but I hope to share with others my story and find a universal connection that tells us we’re not alone.

Andy York was raised in rural upstate New York, about half an hour from the Canadian border in the town of Canton. He attended Alfred University, in a one stoplight town nestled within the hills of western New York. He left these safe confines with a BFA concentrating in graphic design and a minor in art history. Unable to resist the “big city” experience, Andy moved to the Chicago area in 2005. After gaining experience in both art and design Andy has moved to the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area in 2017 and currently works as a Production Designer within the package design and branding industry.
