I first met Cliffy when I was only 16 months old, when he began working for my father as a construction laborer. Cliffy couldn’t read or write. He grew up down South, picking cotton and never even finished elementary school. Yet he taught himself constantly, even learning how to survey. He was as strong as a bull, and had one speed – STEADY. He never made a false move, every move counted. So when I went to work as a laborer for my dad, he told me to watch and learn from Cliffy... to follow his steady pace. But it was more than just his pace. Part of my learning was seeing Cliffy always full of trust and giving. When Cliffy died, my dad took me to his funeral. Being it was my first open casket ceremony I felt a little uneasy. But his entire family welcomed us with open arms. This was “Mr. Herb” (and son)... the man that always tried to help Cliffy and treated him with the utmost respect. When I asked my dad to describe Cliffy in one word, it was LOYALTY. I know my dad helped create that in him, as he has in me.

Though I reside in California, I am originally from the Hudson Valley area in NY, and return there often. I am inspired by everything… from a diffused shadow to a deep crimson found in a flower. And of course, other artists. From Van Gogh to the unworldly genius of Michelangelo, from Alma-Tadema to Dürer, Rembrandt to Renoir, the drawings of Raphael or Da Vinci… or even a cinematographer like Christopher Doyle or a Prod. Designer like Dante Ferretti. I took classes in college and workshops such as Albert Handel. But I have been doing this as far back as I can remember. As a kid, I threw on a foot driven potter’s wheel for 10 years. When they put a motor on it, it threw me! And I work in almost all medium(s). When I chisel a rock, instead of deepening the amount of shading, I just cut more away. I’ve been in regional shows and have works in several private collections. But it is only recently that I have decided to begin selling my work publicly.
