BIO Rachael’s studio is located in the seaside town of St. Ives, U.K. She is inspired by nature. Her drawings and paintings are relatively small in size, yet intense and emotionally charged. She is the daughter of noted Canadian Author and Poet, Norman Levine (1923 – 2005). Norman was part of the St. Ives artistic community in Cornwall, U.K., and friends with painters Patrick Heron and Francis Bacon. Contrasting Rachael’s abstract artistic style with that of her father’s, his written expression has been described as not ‘abstract’, rather, ‘concrete’. He wrote in his 1993 essay, ‘Sometimes It Works’, “The leaner the language, the more suggestive’. (1) "Her paintings are visual representations of long held feelings, memories and responses, as unique visual translations into psycho-synaesthesic images of her inner life. They also echo her experiences and recognition of the outer nature of the land and its vegetative forms - the two being brought and woven together in the paintings. Although small in physical size, they convey a sense of the cosmic endlessness of rhythmic space, time and the complexity of evolving life forms". (1) -- John Charles Clark 2011 (1) Oldham, A. (2005, July 1). Norman Levine: Novelist with painter’s perception. The Guardian. Rachael was born in Brighton, Sussex 1957, then moved to St. Ives in 1959. After schooling, she lived in various parts of England. Rachael acquired her first studio in St. Ives in 1985 and experimented with various styles and mediums. She moved into her current studio in Penwith Gallery Complex 1989, showing at galleries including Plumbline Gallery between 1995 and 2001, and exhibited in mixed shows in Gloucestershire, Bristol, London, Edinburgh, Brittany, France. Rachael decided to return to her original voice / style in 1997 - the style she first established at the age of fourteen years old. She showed a large selection of these works in ‘Obsession’ at Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall in 2001. She has continued to explore these complex synaesthesic images both in colour and black and white, and obtains much inspiration from nature. This nourishes her creative process and is fused in translation into her highly personal imagery. Postma Fine Art represents her work internationally and introduced Canadian Collectors to her work for the first time, at Art Toronto 2014 International Art Fair.
