About The Artwork

This drawing is about the tension between conformity and self-preservation, symmetry and imperfection. Nature is an effective medium for expressing the chaos that resides around us. Birds are often portrayed as whimsical, almost fairy like creatures. However, in this piece there is chaos seen in the fight for life. I wouldn't say this piece is about birds, but more about our own social struggle between conformity and autonomy. One of my intentions is to draw the viewer into the centre by the activity and colour in this piece, and then to provoke questions. What is happening in this piece? Are the birds fighting each other or being drawn together? Will the central character be preserved or destroyed? The piece is completed using highly pigmented and light fast coloured pencils and therefore has an incredibly luminous HD finish.

• Wildlife and bird paintings, with a touch of Alchemy • I'm Esther Brown, a Wildlife & Bird artist working in Oils and Acrylics with Gold Leaf. I love representing the beautiful creatures on this planet in new ways, often using pattern, spray paint and pure gold to give my pieces a touch of alchemy and their unique quality. I am British/South African by birth and was born and raised in Japan. I also spent time living in India during my upbringing and all of these influences have had an impact on how I see the world and create art. Many of my pieces are created with Japanese Washi Paper or use Japanese patterns and some include elements such as a golden sun. I am also very drawn to painting African & Indian animals and birds, as nature has everything I need for inspiration.
