About The Artwork

The female image is complicated. Women can often find themselves between the stages of subject and object. We see ourselves as subjects, but we get treated as objects. This is exaggerated in a two dimensional form, where the woman is not physically present. In a photograph, video, or painting the depiction of a woman’s body can objectify and flatten her multiplicities. Elleree Fletcher’s work is an examination of being and becoming a woman. Using a blind contour technique, she questions sexuality and its linkage to objectification. By only looking at the canvas and not the reference image, the line work distorts the sexualized image. This disfiguration questions what it means to be woman, the tension of objectivity and subjectivity, and if sexuality is an integral part of growing up.
