chinese ink on smooth transparent paper fastened into a folding card box, horse hair. the title of this double-portraiture series is 'incidental grace'. i choose the plant according to its nomenclature and how well that suits and is transferable onto the female portrait, fading photographs i found in the draw of my grandmothers desk. nameless friends, cousins, sisters and daughters, all of them long since passed away. i play with ovids 'metamorphosis' in which the gods change human beings into plants or animals when they are in great danger. subsequently the plant receives the name of the metamorphosed human being. i reverse the process with this work, giving the anonymous female the name of the plant.
