Extinction Outburst Drawing

This piece was inspired by a really hard personal time in my life and thinking about how narcissism is so central to our inner lives and how that is reflected in our political culture. I was reading a lot about Egyptian mythology and was fascinated by their symbols of renewal and destruction and how intertwined they are. There is some Greek mythology wrapped up in this piece too because my reading on Egyptian images naturally led to the overlaps with the greek allegorical universe. The title comes from the psychological study of narcissism: Very simply put, an Extinction Burst event is when your brain doubles down on a harmful behavior in one last defiance when you try to eliminate or reduce that behavior. This piece is largely how this impulse shows up in us on an individual basis as well as the serpentine ways this happens within the competing and overlapping worlds of ecology, economics, and politics.
