"GARISH: It's Only Forever"; 2017; Ink, Acrylic, and Spray Paint on Canvas; 30" x 40" After Garish: Ziggy was so received by my patrons, I knew it was only a matter of time before I made another David Bowie Portrait. My inspiration came when I was watching Labyrinth one night while camping with my family at one of my shows this summer. I thought about how frequently Bowie changed his look and style, consistantly evolving and trying new things to perfect his craft. Many of his fans can cite one or two iconic styles that speak to them personally, but I felt his role in the cult classic Labyrinth spoke most to me. Here is Bowie, having to act alongside a teenage girl and animals and muppets, and he treats it like its nothing, while maintaining his composure, coolness, and sexuality. All in those grey tights. Many people would be seriously phased by the idea of having their likeness attached to such a strange film, but to Bowie, it seems like NBD. In the lyrics of "Underground", he sings, "It's Only Forever/ it's not long at all..."
