About The Artwork

The history of African Americans is a history of struggle and resilience. The ancestors worked hard to build this country, with no self-autonomy, enduring brutal conditions for two centuries in Southern plantation and Northern industries to build the booming American economy. They also contributed to the nation's defense, fighting in every war from the American Revolution to the present. Today, that legacy negatively affects the descendants of those who were enslaved, as they face systemic racism, discrimination, and inequality in every aspect of life. However, they also inherit a rich culture, a strong sense of identity, and a determination to overcome the barriers that have been erected against them. They are reclaiming their roots, tracing their ancestry beyond the "brick wall" of 1870, and celebrating their achievements and contributions to American society. 'The Story of Us' is a conceptual series contrasting present African American realities with past predicaments. Within each piece, the viewer will come face to face with elements of different eras, illustrating the continuation of, or in some cases the emergence of, traditions or institutions. God Bless the Child is the first in the series, combining a youth coming into his own starring into his future, with a timeless couple working the fields for a future they cannot see. The couple working the fields cannot see the future that awaits their descendent, nor can the youth feel the pain and despair of the couple. The couple never had 'their own' and anything that was 'theirs' belonged to others. And though the ancestors could not see the future autonomy of Blacks, the youth can 'own' the legacy and veneration of their enduring ancestors.

My name is Jeremy Phelps and I have been an artist practically since birth. Though all kids are natural artists, most of us put down the artistic tools and 'grow' out of it at a certain age. I never did. I have always appreciated the animation in cartoons and games, the way Disney makes magic happen on the big screen, and mostly the way fine artists make us feel with their two- and three-dimensional extensions of themselves. I've always known that this is my gift and my place in the world, to be an artist. I love to experiment with different mediums and subjects. I can create beautiful landscapes with colored pencils, vibrant portraits with pastels, and abstract compositions with acrylics. I enjoy the challenge of switching between different techniques and styles, and I feel like each medium has its own charm and personality. Sometimes I wonder if I should focus on one medium and master it, or if I should keep exploring and learning new things. Maybe I am afraid of missing out on something, or maybe I am just too curious and adventurous. The same dilemma applies to my subject interest. I like to draw animals, women, celebrities, historical narratives, plants, and anything that catches my eye. I don't want to limit myself to one theme or genre, but I also don't want to confuse my audience or lose my identity as an artist. How do you balance variety and consistency in art? That's a question that only time will tell for me.
