About The Artwork

This artwork represents the mystery of sleeping. Each night our eyes close to evoke our inner world. The red blanket covers the woman who is making her journey with warmth and sweetness as her hair turns into branches that lead to the stars.

Director, screenwriter and painter, Caterina Carone was born in Ascoli Piceno, Italy, in 1982. She lived in Vienna, Berlin, Rome, Milan and Turin before settling in Bologna, where she also has her atelier. Caterina is a self-taught artist, who started drawing from a very young age without ever stopping. Her imagination was deeply influenced by her origins, linked to a small nice town in Central Italy with a particular name, Sant'Omero, which evokes the Greek poet Homer, author of the epic poems Iliad and Odyssey, and the nearby eccentric Adriatic coast, half marvelous countryside and half uncontrolled construction, which continue to inspire her imaginative aesthetic today. She started her career as a documentary filmmaker by obtaining important awards. She wrote and directed the feature film 'Fräulein - A winter fairytale' with the actors Christian De Sica and Lucia Mascino, produced by the film production Tempesta, released in Italian and foreign cinemas in 2016 and now available on Raiplay, Sky, Apple TV, Youtube, Google play and Amazon prime. In December 2019 the insert 'La Lettura' of the Italian national newspaper Corriere Della Sera published her graphic novel entitled "The wings", a story of fall and rebirth through the wings of desire. Also in 2019 she attended the BoCS Art Cosenza artistic residency curated by the writer and painter Tommaso Pincio and the art critic Giacinto di Pietrantonio. In 2020 she shot her short film 'The sun and the other stars', conceived and written with the screenwriter Alessio Galbiati, produced by Mao srl and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, as part of the Author's Short Films Competition organized by MAECI and ANICA to promote Italian excellence abroad. Now available on vimeo: https://vimeo.com/504417389 Her mixed media paintings find the middle ground between art and illustration, providing the viewer with wonder and deep spiritual thoughts. Furthermore, the peculiarity and originality of her art lies in her ability to combine the passion for a cinematic image rich in dark and light contrasts, full of colors and evocative or memorable moments, but also the delicate, sinuous, essential or complex lines of some Japanese artists such as Hiroshige and Hokusai and the artist she considers her main mentor, the great cartoonist and illustrator Saul Steinberg.
