About The Artwork

Art engages with the subject of depression in quite a different manner than science. A painter’s artistry can not solve the problems that disturb, disquiet or torment her. A painting can not eliminate despair, but can convey a sense of it to its audience, through layering, transposing and projecting the immaterial onto various materials. As a female, painting about depression allows me to bring my own experience out into open and to examine it from a feminine point of view. Through research on the theme I found that depression is written into the map of contemporary woman’s subjectivity. My work alludes to the occurrence of depression as a common contemporary phenomenon in female subjectivity; stereotypes of feminine ideals propagated by the media have often led to a sense of failure in women who have pursued individualistic goals. Even for women who have liberated themselves from sociocultural restraints, depressive disorders can present a formidable barrier to possessing a positive sense of self and personal value. (2007)
