About The Artwork

When I was young and extremely curious, I used to read any book that was coming to my hand. I remember that once in a very small old and rundown bookstore close to the university, I found a small, old and tiny book on a very dusty shelf. The book was a religious book, and happened to be a very interesting book for me at that age. Strangely, it was about the eighteen unknown years of Jesus’ life and therefore, an important “testament gap”. I remember that in the book, the author wrote about Jesus traveling around the world in search of truth and probably himself. He traveled to the great Persian empire and its different old philosophical and theological schools, to India for the same reason to spend some times with Indian Brahmas, and finally up to Tibet, meeting and studying also with Himalayan monks, and naturally combining all these different theological and divine ideas and knowledge, before coming back to Galilee and Judea, and starting his own ministry. Later on, I read works by other writers and scholars’ views and beliefs and especially those of many theologians such as, “Joseph of Arimathea” on the Arthurian cycle, "Indian Brahmas and Hinduism", as well as writings by Tibetan monks and their philosophy, thoughts and influences on Jesus’ life. In his books, "Bible dans l'Inde, and Vie de Iezeus Christna" (The Bible in India, and the Life of Jezeus Christna), Louis Jacolliot believed, and put forward the various arguments regarding Jesus’ life, although he himself never claimed that Jesus traveled to India. Then, in 1887 a Russian war correspondent, Nicolas Notovitch claimed that while at the Hemis Monastery in Ladakh, he had learned of the document "Life of Saint Issa, Best of the Sons of Men". Issa is the Arabic name of Jesus in Islam. Notovitch's story, with a translated text of the "Life of Saint Issa," was published in French in 1894 as "La vie inconnue Jesus Christ", (partly known as the Life of Jesus Christ). In 1908 Levi H. Dowling published the “Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ” which he claimed was channeled to him from the Akashi Records as the true story of the life of Jesus, including the lost eighteen years about which the New Testament is silent. The narrative follows the young Jesus across ancient Persia, India, Tibet, Assyria, Greece and also the great Egypt. Dowling's work was later used by Holger Kersten who combined it with elements derived from other sources such as the "Ahmadiyya Beliefs". In reality, the argument is never ending. In 1981 Holger Kersten, a German writer on esoteric subjects popularized the subject in his “Christ Lived in India”. Kersten's ideas were among various expositions of the theory critiqued by Günter Grönbold in Jesus in Indien. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Movement in 1899 wrote about Jesus in Persia and India, “Jesus in Ahmadiyya Islam and Roza Bal”. So, finally to make the long story short, with all due respect and reverence, I decided and tried to make this mythical image of him according to my knowledge. Considering the little we all know about him, but respectfully and according to my own old little book and a bit of knowledge about history, I drew him as you see using my own artistic view and fantasy.

Amir F. Tehrani was born in Iran. At the age of eighteen and after finishing high school he participated in mandatory military service, where he was trained as a medic in the Military University of Iran. He then traveled to remote, outlying villages where he provided critical medical services, performed minor surgery, and actually delivered a number of babies. After that, he traveled to Venice, Italy to further his education in architecture at the L’Universita’ di Architettura di Venezia, and later at the Royal Academiy of Fine Arts, where he specialized in theatre, set architecture, art directing and other fine arts. This study included optics and directing for theatre, after which he worked as an assistant to Notable Maestro Orlandini in La Fanice opera house in Venice. He even had the fortune to work as an assistant to the great Mark Chagall, for the production of Mandragola, the masterpiece of Machiavelli. Returning home to Iran for five years, he was hired by National Iranian Radio and Television (NIRT). He was the set architect, production designer and art director for many productions, either on the sound stages or on real locations. These included: • Daii Jan Napoleon written by Mr. Iradj Pezeshkzad, and directed by Mr. Naser Taghvaii. It was a famous Iranian Television serial, consisting of 18 hours. It is considered the best Iranian serial, even today, and was produced by NIRT. He received the golden cup of the NIRT as the best set architect and production designer for that serial. • Safar e Sang, (Journey of the Stone), a film directed by Mr. Masoud Kimiaii. • Bon Bast, (Dead End), a film directed by Mr. Parviz Sayyad, who still is active in the field of theatre in Los Angeles. • Il Viaggio di Pietro della Valle, (the travel of Pietro della Valle) it was about an Italian noble- man from Padua, and his travels to the orient. This was an Iranian-Italian production, filmed mostly in south Iran, partly in the famous city of Isfahan, the ex-capital of Persia, as well as in the Persian Gulf on some of its beautiful islands. The film was a period piece, belonging to the era of the great and famous Shah Abbas, one of the Persian kings. At the end of 1977, Mr. Tehrani traveled to the United States to pursue a Master’s Degree in Mass Communications (production and techniques of motion pictures and television) from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He won top gold medal honors as the best student.
