This work articulates the interstices in the personal, cultural and diaspora identities inherent in being a returned migrant, of being an insider and outsider where notions of home and belonging are continuously reconstructed. The concept of mapping is broadly used as a process of enquiry to explore the notion of insider/outsider. From an intuitive process of drawing, the 'maps' do not contain sites of importance or certainty of place rather the chaotic lines are pathways that lead to nowhere and the dots are markers of nowhere resulting in drawings that remain ambiguous offering no explicit meaning. The drawings are the visible embodiment of a ‘liminal personae’ of the lived experiences of migration and returned migration. Process: Lines and dots of acrylic ink washed off to leave 'trails' of white lines.

Studio 3, The Model, Co Sligo, Ireland. I am a visual artist / researcher who is currently based at The Model Arts and Niland Gallery, Co Sligo, Ireland. My practice examines contemporary drawing as phenomenology and the complex lived experiences of migration particularity within Irish and Irish/Australian contexts and landscape which are intended to inform and find form. As a returned migrant who is married to an Australian man and have one child who is Australian, my practice explores the cultural shifts that exist in and after migration which offers an ontological means to explore ‘my’ mark through an experiential and experimental approach. As a dialogic activity and as a vehicle for shared experiences, my approach includes collaboration, social engagement and public participation to further explore the nature and characteristics of drawing as a phenomenology. www.kieraotooleartist.com
